Orissa Tourism »

The historical state of Orissa is situated amidst beautiful lush green mountains of the Eastern Ghats. This historical land is bounded by the states of Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Orissa is blessed its palm-fringed beaches, shimmering lakes, serpentine rivers, mighty waterfalls, forest-clad blue hills of Eastern Ghats, which are home to rich flora and fauna that impress and lure tourists from all over the world. Orissa is famous for its fairs festivals, stone carving, silver filigree, applique work, exquisite handicrafts, and beautiful textiles. Dotted with numerous architecturally celebrated temples, sacred shrines, and historical monuments, Orissa is considered India’s one of the most hidden splendid cultural landscapes.
Bhubaneswar : Also referred to as the Temple City, Bhubaneswar was once home to over 7000 Hindu temples built over seven centuries. Today there are less than 600, many having been lost to the ravages of time and iconoclastic invaders. Bhubaneswar was also an important Buddhist enclave with the conversion of the Hindu king Ashoka, after the battle of Kalinga. Buddhism flourished here for over 1,000 years. Even earlier than that, Jainism flourished here under the patronage of King Kharavela. He was the first historically documented ruler of Orissa with his capital at Sisupalgarh. This is located on the outskirts of present-day Bhubaneswar. The carvings in the Jain cave monasteries, commissioned by him at Khandagiri and Udaygiri, document various aspects of the king`s reign. Located on India`s eastern coast Bhubaneswar, an important commercial and religious hub, was once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Kalinga. In 1948 its importance in Orissa`s political tradition continued with it being chosen as the capital of the new state, after India gained independence from British rule. The multi-cultural city today forms the Golden Triangle of Orissa along with the tourist hubs of the holy beach towns of Puri and Konark. Its excellent connections to the rest the country make it the perfect gateway to explore Orissa`s tourist attractions.
Cuttack :Known as Abhinaba Baranasi Kataka in the medieval age, Cuttack is one of oldest cities of Orissa . Resting on a fertile delta formed by the Mahanadi and Kathjori rivers, Cuttack is a commercial centre bustling with trade activities. Spreading from east to west, a narrow strip of land is what comprises Cuttack. With two topographical divisions, namely, the hilly terrain on the west and Mahanadi delta plains in the east, this densely populated city is highly fertile. Owing its fertility to the water bodies functioning as tributaries of Mahanadi river system, Cuttack is a major producer of rice.
The ideal time to visit Orissa is from October to March owing to its salubrious weather conditions.
